Scottsdale Leadership Celebrates the Dr. Art DeCabooter Scholarship Award for Community Excellence

Scottsdale, AZ – Scottsdale Leadership is currently in its 39th year of developing business and civic leaders through powerful, transformational learning opportunities and offers scholarships for interested participants. One such scholarship is the Dr. Art DeCabooter Scholarship Award, which provides a full-tuition scholarship to a deserving participant of the incoming Scottsdale Leadership class. This prestigious award honors the legacy of Dr. Art DeCabooter, a true servant leader who made significant contributions to the Scottsdale community since arriving in 1978 as the President of Scottsdale Community College.

Dr. DeCabooter served in numerous civic leadership roles for 30 years and was instrumental in the “Save the McDowells” movement, leading to the establishment of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. His leadership on the Preserve Commission resulted in the preservation of over 20,000 acres of pristine desert land, emphasizing the value of Scottsdale's natural landscape for economic viability and attractiveness.

The Dr. Art DeCabooter Scholarship Award recognizes individuals who exemplify commitment to community service, leadership, consistent involvement, and humanitarian values. Nominations are based on:

  • Community Service and Involvement: Demonstrating commitment to Scottsdale Leadership’s core values of Engagement, Inclusion, Connection, Courage, and Stewardship.

  • Leadership: Being recognized as a leader and mentor with notable accomplishments through various organizations.

  • Consistency of Community Involvement: Long-term contributions to the community.

  • Humanitarian Values: Showcasing warmth, inclusivity, and the ability to work with diverse groups.

The current recipient of the Dr. Art DeCabooter Scholarship is Class 39’s Roger Lurie, who has been serving on the City of Scottsdale Human Services Advisory Commission and Housing Governing Board since 2021, recently taking on the role of Chair. Roger actively supports community members through emergency assistance programs and volunteers at the Vista Del Camino Career Center, providing career guidance to students and individuals of all ages.

In addition to his community service, Roger is a Lead Steward for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and works as an Information Technology Consultant for Arizona State University and a Substitute Teacher in the Scottsdale Unified School District.
