Pride in the Past,
Excitement for
What Lies Ahead!

" I'm filled with pride
   and gratitude."

Lee Ann Witt

Executive Director

As we wrap up another remarkable program year, I’m filled with pride and gratitude. On May 9th, we celebrated the Graduation of Class 39 – 48 future leaders who completed our 9-month Leadership Program. Prior to graduation, we hosted our largest-ever Project Lead It Forward (PLIF) Showcase. This year’s theme was Youth, and our five team projects made an extraordinary impact for our community—over 3,200 volunteer hours worked, $140,000 raised, and more than $100,000 raised in in-kind donations, benefiting nearly 2,600 young people throughout Scottsdale.

Thank you to our alumni, board members, partners, and friends who showed up in full force to support our graduates at their celebration. Your presence and encouragement truly make a difference.

Looking ahead, we’re entering an exciting new chapter. Applications for Class 40 are in, and interviews begin in early June. We’ll officially welcome the new class at our Welcome Reception on August 22nd.

Spirit of Community Awards nominations are now open through September 10, 2025, for:

  • The Drinkwater Community Leadership Award, honoring extraordinary civic leaders in the spirit of Mayor Herb Drinkwater.

  • The Hodges Alumni Achievement Award, recognizing a Scottsdale Leadership alumni who exemplifies Frank Hodges' tireless service and community passion.

  • The Frances Young Trailblazer Award, honoring emerging and unconventional leaders making bold contributions to Scottsdale.

Click here to nominate a candidate for consideration.

Finally, mark your calendars for December 12th—we’ll celebrate Scottsdale Leadership’s 40th Anniversary at our annual Spirit of Community Awards Luncheon at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess. This milestone reminds us of the legacy we carry and the future we’re building—together.

Thank you for being a vital part of this journey. Your continued support makes Scottsdale Leadership stronger every year. Here’s to all that lies ahead!

Leadership Emerging:

The Arena Awaits

Class Blog By:

Dr. Jordan Richbourg, Class 39

“I see a big and bright future for each of you.”

That’s how the morning of Class 39’s, The Greatest of All Time, Roger That! last class began. A simple sentence, but one that echoed through everything we’ve experienced these past nine months. The early mornings, the powerful speakers, the unexpected lessons, the vulnerable moments.

Gary Shapiro, in his signature style, reminded us why we started this journey in the first place. And then came the Gary Shapiro gift bag. Inside was a small megaphone which was a playful, almost whimsical token, with a weighty reminder: Be a voice for what’s good and righteous.

That spirit defined Leadership Emerging Day. Held at Nationwide’s Cavasson campus, the day invited us not just to reflect on what leadership means and the classes we have completed, but to prepare for what it demands. Action.

We were welcomed with coffee, connection, and gratitude from Dana, followed by opening remarks from David Wilson, the day sponsor. Lee Ann Witt guided us through the values and structure behind Scottsdale Leadership—engagement, connection, stewardship—and how this program continues to thrive through alumni support. Then she offered a call-to-action for Class 39 to participate in shaping the direction of Scottsdale Leadership.

We took a collective breath with Brene Brown’s "The Man in the Arena", a video that reinforced that the real credit always belongs to those who show up, take risks, and lead from the front.

Then came one of the most powerful moments of the day:
The Aspirational Leader Panel, moderated by Erin Gerace, featuring:

  • Raoul Zubia

  • Doreen Reinke

  • Dr. Erica Tatum-Sheade

  • Kevin Maxwell

Each panelist shared their leadership journey and offered deep, personal reflections. When asked what traits define a great leader, a clear theme emerged:
Integrity. Authenticity. Empathy. Resilience.

Kevin Maxwell’s personal short story stood out. He shared his lifelong passion for playing the drums and how it brought him joy and purpose. A small story of vulnerability was shared about how he posted his drumming on YouTube only to be ridiculed. That moment of judgement lead to, and without even meaning to, gave us a beautiful analogy:  Play the drums: even when no one else hears the beat.
Lead in the way that feels true to you.
Because critics don’t matter when they have no drum of their own to beat.

That is leadership: Having the courage to step into the arena, even when others stand on the sidelines and judge. True leaders face the naysayers, not with anger, but with purpose and continue the fight for what they believe in.

Later, committee members shared how Class 39 could stay involved through programs, outreach, marketing, alumni events, and board service. It was a powerful reminder: Graduation isn’t the finish line, it’s the next starting line.

Over lunch, we reflected individually through Time Capsule Letters and My Intent bracelets, small but meaningful tokens of the leadership journey we've traveled, where we want to go, and the message we want to send to ourselves one year from now.

The afternoon shifted to focus on the Project PLIF: Project Lead It Forward, led by Diane Stouffer. Wrapping up with questions on what to expect at graduation and the final day of our program.

Finally, we circled up one last time to share our Words of Intent - a powerful, vulnerable reflection where each of us offered one word that would guide our leadership journey moving forward.

Because in the end, this day wasn’t just about celebrating where we’ve been.
It was about committing to where we’re going.

As Theodore Roosevelt said:

“It is not the critic who counts… the credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena.”

Class 39, we’re in the arena now.
We’re no longer preparing to lead, we are leading.

And to anyone wondering if they’re ready…
If your heart is stirring, if you care deeply, if you’ve ever thought, “Maybe I could help?”,  then this is your moment.

Join the arena.
 We’re saving you a seat.

Our incredible PLIF Teams
have created significant change and made a difference in our community!

Team Desert Stages Theatre

Class 39 Graduation 2025 colleen katz

Desert Stages Theatre - Originally, the project focused on renovating the theatre space, but as circumstances changed, the mission shifted to something more urgent: saving and relocating the theatre due to the fact that they found themselves without a theatre building. The revised project involved supporting the site closure, researching and securing immediate space for the essential summer camp programs, and exploring a new venue option, all while planning fundraising efforts aimed at providing the financial foundation to successfully launch DST 4.0.

Team Happily Ever After League

Class 39 Graduation 2025 colleen katz

Happily Ever After League (HEAL) –provides resources for mothers recovering from cancer, supporting their healing journey with a one-time grant and ongoing assistance with outreach programs and access to other resources. One such resource is inviting mothers and their families to the HEALing Farm, a place of peace and access to the healing elements of farm animals. Hammy’s HEALing Helpers raised over $ 20,000, including in kind donations, to mitigate the heat for the families and the animals in the warmer months, making the space more usable year round. The team increased shady space through the additional of a larger patio space covered by a gazebo, planting large shade trees around the property, a mister system, and bringing in additional healing touches like water elements and comfortable chairs for relaxing in the space.

Team Playground PALS

Class 39 Graduation 2025 colleen katz

Scottsdale Police Department/SUSD Team PALS – The team beautified two elementary school playgrounds, including painting multiple 4 Square games and installing benches in school colors, creating an inviting and stimulating environment. We purchased essential equipment for outside play and storage vessels for the equipment. The 2025 project culminated with our group hosting a multi-grade 4 Square Tournament at each school, which will not only add a fun and competitive element to recess but will also teach students valuable lessons about winning, losing, and the importance of fair play. It also gave the students and the Scottsdale Police department a playful way to build positive relationships. Through fundraising efforts we were able to pay for all of the above, while leaving a legacy fund for future tournaments at even more schools.

Team HELP

Class 39 Graduation 2025 colleen katz

Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership (H.E.L.P.) – One aspect of this project aimed to: Eliminate ongoing monthly rental cost by acquiring portable containers, redirect those funds to support families and enhance sustainability. Increase efficiency by implementing organized shelving and labeling within the containers, streamline operations, provid easy access to inventory, and managing event materials more effectively. Project REACH Campus Business Plan: This part of the project involved developing a comprehensive business plan to: Provide a strategic roadmap to secure funding, optimize resource allocation, and implement effective services. It also measured and enhanced the impact on families' health, education, and economic stability. The goal is to foster a supportive community environment that empowers families to achieve self-sufficiency and well-being.

Team Miracle League

Class 39 Graduation 2025 colleen katz pictures in pixelsColleen Katz Pictures in Pixels

Miracle League of Arizona - The objective was to support the Miracle League of Arizona, a non-profit dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and fun baseball experience for individuals with special needs. By removing barriers to participation, the league creates a big-league atmosphere where athletes are supported one-on-one by a buddy, fostering social interaction and community. Our efforts focused on expanding the league’s impact through improved marketing ideas. This included creating a new, user-friendly website, marketing initiatives, and upgrading the press box to enhance game-day experiences. These enhancements aim to increase visibility, grow community involvement, boost revenue, and ultimately serve more families. Everyone deserves the chance to play baseball!
