Celebrating the
Spirit of Community

A Day of Connection, Gratitude and Inspiration

There are certain days each year that remind us why we do what we do, and for me, Scottsdale Leadership’s Spirit of Community Awards event is one of those very special days.

On Friday December 11, 2026 at the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale, over 400 of us will come together to celebrate four extraordinary individuals whose leadership, service and commitment to our community exemplify the very best of Scottsdale.

This annual celebration is so much more than presenting awards. It is about recognizing the people who make our community stronger, celebrating the power of service, and reconnecting with the remarkable network of individuals who have helped shape Scottsdale Leadership into the organization it is today.

One of my favorite parts of this awards luncheon is looking around the room and seeing so many familiar faces.  Scottsdale Leadership alumni from across the years, longtime supporters, community partners, friends and new connections all gathered in one place.  There is an energy that is difficult to describe.  The conversations, laughter, hugs and shared memories are wonderful reminders that Scottsdale Leadership is not just a program you complete.  It is a community you become part of for life.

The relationships formed through Scottsdale Leadership extend far beyond the classroom, a community project, or a graduation ceremony.  They become friendships, partnerships, mentorships and opportunities to serve.  They create a network of people who care deeply about the greater Scottsdale community and who continue finding ways to make a meaningful impact.

As Board President, I have the privilege of seeing that commitment firsthand.  I am continually inspired by the dedication of our board, staff, alumni and supporters.  Their passion for developing leaders and strengthening our community makes me incredibly proud to be part of this organization.

As we look ahead to December 11th, I invite you to join us for this special celebration.  Come to honor four deserving leaders, reconnect with old friends, meet someone new, and experience the incredible spirt of our community.

See you at the Spirit of Community Awards!

There were seven Scottsdale Leadership players on the court and plenty of supporters cheering them on at the 4th Annual Rim-2-Rim Charity BasKetball Game, all in support of the Scottsdale Community All Stars!  And, because giving back is what we do, we also participated in the Vitalant Blood Drive happening the same day.  From hoops to heart, Scottsdale Leadership showed up to make a difference!

Dr. Frances Mills-Yerger, Class 16

We have had the privilege of bringing you stories about past Scottsdale Leadership graduates for more than six years now. Every person we have interviewed has had a great story and has done great things for our community.

But after sitting down with Ted Taylor of Class 26, we realized his story was something a little different. Maybe it was the sheer number of twists and turns his life has taken. Maybe it was his willingness to talk openly not only about his successes, but also about those moments when he felt he had failed completely. Or maybe it was the way all those seemingly unrelated experiences eventually came together and led him to discover what he believes he was meant to do.

Whatever it was, we walked away fascinated by Ted’s almost unbelievable story of reinvention, redemption and service—and proud that we are all part of the same Scottsdale Leadership family.

Welcome Day

Class 41 Launches with Connection, Courage and Community

On Friday, September 18, Class 41 officially launched its Scottsdale Leadership journey with a dynamic and engaging Welcome Day. Gathering at the Homestead at DC Ranch, participants were welcomed by Scottsdale Leadership co-founder Gary Shapiro, who shared the story of the organization's founding in 1986 and reflected on its lasting impact on both the Scottsdale community and the lives of program participants.

The morning continued with an interactive exploration of the Emergenetics Profile and Assessment Process. Facilitated by Merle Riepe, PhD, Class 30, the three-and-a-half-hour seminar provided participants with a deeper understanding of their individual thinking and behavioral preferences and how those preferences shape interactions with others. Through a series of engaging activities, Dr. Riepe helped class members interpret their personal profiles, recognize how their styles may emerge in different situations and identify strategies for building stronger, more collaborative relationships.

In addition to gaining insight into their individual profiles, participants explored the collective characteristics of Class 41. While the class represents a broad range of thinking and behavioral attributes, the group demonstrated a particularly strong preference for the Social thinking attribute, reflecting a shared emphasis on relationships, empathy and team connection.

The afternoon session opened with an overview of team norms and communication expectations presented by Assistant Director, Dana Close before transitioning to an introduction to the Scottsdale Leadership Mentorship Program, presented by Bill Scarbrough, Class 31.  Participants then heard from Lori Schneider, Class 39, who reflected on the transformational role Scottsdale Leadership has played in her personal and professional life. Her remarks provided both inspiration and encouragement for the journey ahead. Among the many pieces of wisdom she shared with Class 41, one message resonated especially strongly: "You are going to leave here with courage."

The day concluded with the part that many participants had anticipated with a mix of excitement and some nerves: the 90-Second Commercials. Class members showcased their personalities, passions, and life experiences through a wide variety of approaches, including poems, songs, baked goods, photographs, and meaningful personal props. Despite the diversity of presentations, a common thread emerged: vulnerability. Each participant demonstrated a willingness to share not only their accomplishments and passions, but also the challenges, values and experiences that have shaped them.

The energy in the room was palpable as classmates cheered one another on and connected through stories of resilience, growth and purpose. By the end of the day, Class 41 had already begun to build the trust, authenticity and sense of community that will serve as the foundation for their Scottsdale Leadership experience in the months ahead.
