Police Day

Police Day kicked off with our Day Sponsor, Jeff Miller (Class 27) from First Bank, introducing the newly created Scottsdale Police Foundation. This 501(c)3 non-profit organization was established in 2023 to raise funds that support and enhance Scottsdale Police Department programs and initiatives. The Foundation plays a vital role in funding area commands, special units, equipment, training, and community engagement efforts that strengthen connections between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Following Jeff's introduction, Commander Chris Coffee (Class 37) and Lieutenant Nick Alamshaw (Class 35) outlined the day's goals and key leadership lessons we should walk away with.

Interim Chief Joe LeDuc (Class 32) reminded us why Scottsdale PD is something special. He walked us through the department's organizational chart and its wide range of responsibilities—from protecting the Sonoran Wildlife Preserve in North Scottsdale to maintaining order in Old Town's bustling entertainment district. The chief's Q&A was a hit, with our famously curious Class 39 asking questions right up until the very last moment.

Our next stop was the SWAT/TECH unit, where we got an inside look at what it takes to be a SWAT officer. We explored their impressive tools—from a bomb robot that looks like a Mars Rover to high-tech drones, the armored BearCat vehicle, and various handheld weapons. The session gave us a whole new appreciation for the skill and precision required in these high-pressure situations.

The K-9 Unit demonstration followed, featuring three K-9 officers and K-9 Rocco. We watched Rocco in action as he apprehended an officer in a bite suit, reinforcing that these dogs aren’t your average household pets—their purpose is serious, and their handler's command is everything. Tragically, just one week later, Rocco was shot in the line of duty. We were heartened to hear he’s now recovering at home from that serious injury.

The day wrapped up with three rotating experiences:

  • Experience A: Training Sgt. Dan Serbalik led a hands-on Taser and Virtual Reality session. We learned about Taser use in suspect apprehension and got to test our skills in a realistic VR Taser scenario.

  • Experience B: Director Cassie Johnson (Class 39) ran a fun "Price is Right" game featuring police gear. The class was shocked at the cost of essentials like police vests, K-9 dogs, and the SPD BearCat. Winners walked away with SPD swag.

  • Experience C: This session had us watching two officers play an intense game of pick-up basketball. Suddenly, shots rang out from the west parking lot, and a young blonde woman in a blue sweatshirt and gray pants ran away with a gun in her hand. This staged scenario challenged us to recall her description—and while we came close, no one nailed it perfectly.

The day concluded with Assistant Chief Rich Slavin (Class 31) reminding us of SPD's high standards. He noted that only 2% of applicants make it through the hiring process, and that 96% of reports on officer conduct come from other officers—a testament to the department's accountability and professionalism, and the public’s approval!

We closed the day reflecting on what we had learned about leadership, teamwork, and service. The K-9 demonstration may have been the highlight for many of us, but the dedication and passion of everyone at SPD left an equally lasting impression.

Scottsdale Leadership Class 39 extends our heartfelt thanks to Interim Chief Joe LeDuc (Class 32), Assistant Chief Rich Slavin (Class 31) Commander Chris Coffee (Class 37), Lieutenant Nick Alamshaw (Class 35), Advanced Training Unit Sergeant Dan Serbalik, Director Cassie Johnson (Class 39), the K-9 Unit, the SWAT Team, Jeff Miller (Class 27), and most importantly, Rocco, for an exciting and informative day.
