Diversity and Inclusion Day by, Kevin Stone
To kick off the New Year, Scottsdale Leadership Class 39 embarked on an insightful journey focused on Diversity and Inclusion. Leading this initiative were Day Chairs Todd Larson (Class 32) and Kris Cano (Class 33). Diversity and Inclusion Day offered a comprehensive exploration of historical events that shaped the world, tragic and heroic moments within our own community, and the personal challenges we face. This day served as a catalyst for Class 39’s ongoing dialogue about the lives of those around us and how the principles of diversity and inclusion continue to influence our world today.
The journey began with the work of the Community Celebrations and Diversity (CCD) organization and a poignant reflection on the impactful celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and the stories of diversity that inspired its creation in Scottsdale, Arizona. Don Logan (Class 6) shared his personal and courageous story, detailing his efforts to promote diversity within the City of Scottsdale. His dedication sparked meaningful change, despite encountering a hateful life changing event from individuals outside the community.
Todd Larson, our Day Chair, then guided us through a historical examination of the events leading up to World War II. His presentation, What You Do Matters: Lessons from the Holocaust, provided a thought-provoking analysis of early 20th-century Germany and the role of the German police in the atrocities of the Holocaust. It underscored the crucial lessons learned from a passive society that allowed such horrors to unfold.
Kris Cano then facilitated an exercise outside, encouraging the class to reflect on the diversity within our own group. By arranging Class 39 in a line, Kris asked a series of questions that highlighted our individual privileges and challenges. The exercise concluded with the class gaining a deeper understanding of our shared experiences and varying privileges. Kris and Justin Layman (Class 33) also shared personal stories of vulnerability, offering valuable insights into their own journeys.
The day concluded with a mix of challenges, reflections, and meaningful dialogue about the importance of diversity and inclusion, both within our class and the broader Scottsdale community.
