Alumni Spotlight - Katie Campana
Class:
XX - Dos Esquis

Current place of employment and title:
Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Director of Community Relations

Community Involvement:
Scottsdale Leadership, Spirit of Community Leadership Luncheon Logistics Committee, Arts Day Co-chair; American Heart Association, American Heart Walk Logistics Committee; current class member of Valley Leadership

How has Scottsdale Leadership helped you contribute to your current job or community involvement?
My job requires knowing about what is going on in the community, understanding issues, connecting businesses, and building relationships with business leaders; that is exactly what Scottsdale Leadership offers.

Who has inspired you the most?
My family inspires me. My father started us off with his work on the Scottsdale City Council in the 70’s, my mother joined a decade later, and my sister has also taken an active role in creating a community dialogue. They have each continued to make a difference in their own unique way and I am so proud of the work they have done.

What was your most memorable Scottsdale Leadership class day and why?
Experiences are always the most memorable for me, so I would say the most memorable was our group project day at Sierra Vista Academy. We painted side by side with the students and helped to create a new school environment. It was so memorable because at the end of the day we created something together. We were role models for students who needed mentoring and to feel pride in their school.

What is one goal you have for this year?
My goal is to take advantage of more opportunities that are presented to me. Often it is easier to say no or to find an excuse, but the truth is that experiences usually leads to something amazing. Also, to make sure the Phoenix Chamber has a successful year.

What is your favorite Scottsdale place/thing to do?
It is gorgeous outside these days, so hiking Camelback or Pinnacle Peak is a must. Congratulating ourselves for a great hike, a “bike and pub crawl” is always nice too! Riding around Scottsdale, enjoying the public art, and visiting some of our local eateries and watering holes are at the top of my list as well. I have also recently discovered the Scottsdale Farmer’s Market on Saturdays – and there is a new Sunday one too!

What is a hot topic or current development happening in your company or organization?
Our board Chairman reluctantly accepted the resignation of our President and CEO. It will not be easy finding another mentor and leader with such vision and business acumen, but fortunately we have an amazing Board of Directors to handle the search.

If you couldn't have your current job, what would you want to do?
I'm quite certain that if I weren't at my current job I'd be doing the same thing for another company – community relations and investment. What can I say, it’s in my blood!

If you could change one thing about Scottsdale, what would it be?
I would like to have the light rail run through downtown Scottsdale and beyond - I'd love an easier commute! Also, to have fewer hot summer days and more fall and spring days when the weather is perfect and all the fun stuff happens.

What advice can you give the current class, Class XXIII?
Listen, be present, be active – stay active, and enjoy the days as well as your class members.
